Serving Others Brings Pleasant Surprises

Illustrating This Beautiful, Endearing and Enduring Principle

One night, at 11:30 p.m., and older African American woman was standing on the side of an Alabama highway [and] trying to endure a lashing rain storm. Her car had broken down, and she desperately needed a ride. Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car.

A young white man stopped to help her, [an action which was] generally unheard of in those conflict-filled 1960's. The man took her to safety, helped her get assistance, and put her into a taxi-cab.

She seemed to be in a big hurry, but wrote down his address and thanked him. Seven days went by, and a knock came on the man's door. To his
surprise, a giant console color TV was delivered to his door. A special note was attached. It read:

"Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway the other night. The rain drenched not only my clothes, but also my spirit. Then you came along. Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying husband's bedside just before he passed away...God bless you for helping me and unselfishly serving others."

The Touch Of The Master's Hand

This is undeniably, one of my all-time favorite poems, guaranteed to bring tears to my eyes. With the greatest of acknowledgment of and appreciation to Myra Brooks Welch, I will now present for your pleasure and enlightenment, "The Touch Of The Master's Hand."

'Twas battered and scarred, and the auctioneer
Thought it scarcely worth his while
To waste his time on the old violin,
But he held it up with a smile.

"What am I bid, good friends?" he cried.
"Who'll start the bidding for me?
One dollar! Only one? And who'll make it two?
Two dollars, once. And three!

Three dollars, once. And three dollars, twice.
And going and going," but no...
From the back of the room a grey-haired man
Came forward and picked up the bow.

And wiping the dust from the old violin,
And tightening the loose strings,
He played a melody pure and sweet
As caroling angels sing.

The music ceased, and the auctioneer
With a voice that was quiet and low,
Said, "What am I bid for the old violin?"
As he held it up with the bow.

"One thousand dollars, and who'll make it two?
Two thousand dollars, and three!
Three thousand, once. And three thousand twice.
And going, and going, and gone!" said he.

The people cheered, but some of them cried,
"We don't quite understand
What changed its worth.? Swift came the reply.
" 'Twas the touch of the Master's hand."

And many a man with a life out of tune
And battered and scarred with sin,
Is auctioned cheap to the thoughtless crowd
Much like this old violin.

As mess of pottage, a glass of wine.
A game, and he travels on.
He's going once, and going twice.
And going, and almost gone.

But the Master comes, and the thoughtless crowd
Never can quite understand
The worth of a soul, and the change that is wrought,
By the touch of the Master's hand.

the obvious conclusion to her poem. This short
poem has its basis in my understanding of the
"Plan of Salvation," as taught by the First
Presidency of the Church of JESUS CHRIST of

Whom do we know, who is Battered and Scarred
And Forgotten by All, but You?
We are Placed here to Serve; the Master Requires,
That SERVING is what We'll Do!
Bt, should we Fall Short, a Life to Save,
Then Both of us will Lose:
He, Life Eternal, and We, our Reward,
If We, NOT To Serve, Doth Choose!

My wife, Jeanne (Pronounced "Jean") loves these products:
